The Ghansoli Mookambika temple was initially founded in the year 1973 by the canteen employees of the erstwhile Standard Alkali Company, situated at Ghansoli of Navimumbai. The initiative in this venture was taken by Shri Padmanabha Kotian, who was the In- charge of the canteen at Standard Alkali Company. Since the beginning, prayers and worship was offered everyday to the Goddess in this little temple, and special bhajan programs were held every Friday.
A Decade later, in the year 1985, under the able leadership of the President of the temple committee, Dharmadarshi, Shri Anni C Shetty, a majestic and south Indian style temple plan was charted out. To fulfill this dream Shri Shetty formed a working committee of sincere people who took up the challenge and persevered day and night to realize the dream of establishing a beautiful temple at Ghansoli. This committee was registered in the year 1991.
To construct the temple, the foundation stone was laid on 17-06-1999 with hands of his hollyness Shri Anantha Padmanabha Asranna of Shree Kshetra Kateel and Minister of Maharashtra State, Shri.Ganesh Naik .Thus through their painstaking efforts the present magnificent temple of Goddess Mookambika was ready for worship in the year 2003.This beautiful South Indian style temple was built with the stone brought from Madurai by renowned sculptor ( stapathi ), Shri.Dhakshina Moorty. This temple was inaugurated on 20th March 2003, by his hollyness, Dharmadhikari of Shreekshetra Dharmastala, Dr.Veerendra Hegde along with Shri. Gurudevananda Swamiji of Shreekshetra Odiyoor and Minister Maharashtra, Shri. Suresh Shetty & Shri. Kripa Shankar Singh
Well known as a DEVIKSHETRA in Mumbai, this temple is situated to the East of the Ghansoli railway station. Which is just three minutes walk from the station. Surrounded by lush green coconut and palm trees, the temple is in the midst of nature.
Everyday pooja is performed according to Vedic rituals, and every Friday special prayers are offered. During the ten days of Dasara, and during the five days of Punar Pratishta devotees flock to the temple in ten thousands. The Bali Pooja, the Palaki Pooja, and the Jalaka Bali utsavas, which are performed only in the South Indian temples, are carried out in this temple during these auspicious days.
Special programmes are held during Hindu festivals of Nag panchami, Gokulashtami, Ganesh chaturthi, Deepavali, Tulsi puja and Ayyappa mandal pooja. Religious programmes like Varamahalakshmi Vrata and Arishina Kumkuma are also held in the premises of the temple. The South Indian dance drama –the Yakshagana –Tala maddale is believed to appease the goddess, hence such programmes are also held frequently in the temple premises. Apart from these ,devotional orchestra,, spiritual talks, bhajans, traditional classical dance and religious get together are also organized in the temple premises.
The temple administration has also extended its hands to social and charitable activities under the name of Shri Santoshi Mata Devalaya Charitable Trust. This trust runs a English school up to the first standard, gives scholarship to brilliant students, distributes books to poor students, and offers medical aid and holds medical camps for the benefit of the poor.
Since the space to conduct such social welfare activities is not enough, president and the members of the administrative committee has demanded 1000sq meter land with the CIDCO. Even CIDCO may grant the land to construct an Auditorium. The temple committee expects donors to lend a helping hand in this noble task.
At this beautiful temple one can thus see the amalgamation of the religious, social and cultural activities conducted for the benefit of the devotees. May the blessings of Devi Mookambika protect one and all.
